About Dr. Mulka MD, PhD - Mayo Clinic Trained Physician

Joe Mulka

Dr. Mulka has always been interested in how the human body functions. As a teenager, he was an avid weightlifter, continually trying to figure out how the body moved and functioned. This curiosity and drive led him to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Turning more toward the intersection of engineering and medicine, he completed a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan. During graduate school, he worked in the lab of Dr. Robert Dennis, PhD, one of the top Biomedical Engineers in the World. His doctoral thesis was centered on how mechanical vibrations and impacts affect skeletal muscle cells. Dr. Mulka loved studying engineering and building electromechanical prototypes for biomedical research, but realized that his true passion was helping people heal and understand how to take care of their bodies. He received his MD degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, followed by a four-year residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. While training at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Mulka worked side by side with the world’s experts in Orthopedics, Neurology, Pain Management, and Brain Injury. Being a Biomedical Engineer and a Physician, Dr. Mulka is always trying to find more successful and efficient ways to treat patients. He has a passion for healthcare reform and is dedicated to providing state of the art, high quality, low-cost, non-invasive, effective treatments for pain and concussion/brain injuries. His goal is to identify the cause and severity of a problem and to create a custom treatment plan for each patient based on scientific research and the patient’s unique lifestyle and goals.

Dr. Mulka specializes in the non-surgical treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain.  He uses state of the art medial science to treat pain without medications, injections, or surgeries. He completed a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan followed by his MD training at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI.

Dr. Mulka then completed a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He has practiced at Nebraska Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine in Lincoln, NE for 5 years where he has continued to hone his skills at diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal pain.

Dr. Mulka uses a convenient online scheduling system in order to maximize accessibility to his practice. Click on the “Schedule now” link below to choose an appointment time that works for you.
